Dielectric properties of insulating materials

Dielectric (insulator) is one of the positive and negative charges under the action of the electric field for the main polarization of a class of materials. The dielectric band gap E is large (greater than 4eV), the electrons in the valence band are difficult to transition to the conduction band, the charge is in a bound state, so it can only be polarized in the electric field, difficult to participate in conduction.

The purpose of isolating conductors of different potentials and limiting current flow in electrical and electronic equipment can be achieved by using the electrical insulation of the dielectric. Therefore, insulation materials have the characteristics of high breakdown strength and volume resistivity and low tanδ. In the application, it is often needed to play the role of mechanical support and fixation, heat dissipation and cooling, arc extinguishing and so on. When dielectric is used as electrical functional material, it is not limited to electrical insulation properties, but uses its various characteristics. With the development of high technology, functional dielectric develops rapidly and is used more and more widely.

It should be noted that the electrical properties of insulating materials are closely related to the environmental conditions, and generally cannot be used to represent the performance of the whole working range with the performance measured under a single loop condition. In addition, experimental methods have a strong influence on the measured values of material properties.
